The Asia Region is a vast landmass stretching from the eastern borders of Central Europe to the islands of Japan and the Pacific Ocean, and from the Russian Arctic Circle to the tropics of India and the islands of Indonesia. Including many countries, this huge area contains an almost impossible array of customs, cultures and religions, and innumerable attractions in hundreds of cities and thousands of villages which are scattered over varied and beautiful landscapes of high plateaus, huge mountain ranges, vast deserts and some of the worlds’ longest rivers – a mysterious and fascinating region, Asia today opens its’ door to the intrepid traveller looking for the delights of the east!!
Asia encompasses the spirituality of India, the Holy city of Varanasi and the River Ganges, images of the Taj Mahal and the Golden Temple of Amritsar - the friendly people of Nepal and the spectacular Himalayas - the Great Wall of China, one of the only man-made structures visible from space, the Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an and the Summer Palace, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven of Beijing. Then there are the barren mountains and vast grasslands of the Mongolian plateau which support nomadic herders with their collapsible yurt felt houses – or the mountainous northern regions of Thailand where the shy and retiring hill tribes can be found dressed in their colourful and unique costumes – or the cold wastelands of the Arctic regions of north-eastern Russia where the Siberian Yupiks breed and tend their herds of reindeer – and the high mountains of Tibet, known as the ‘Roof of the World’, where the historic city of Lhasa is located with its beautiful, hilltop Potala Palace, the traditional seat of the Dalai Lama. Add to this the frenetic activity of Hong Kong with its awesome skyline and busy harbour, the island city of Singapore with its multi-cultural population, the exciting and busy city of Tokyo, and the ‘Global City’ of Moscow with its historic Kremlin, Red Square and the colourful onion domes of the Cathedral of Saint Basil the Blessed, and Asia can be seen to start to unfold!!
Asia is also home to many other world renowned cultural and historic centres some of which are now U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Sites, such as Saint Petersburg which was the capital of Russia for 200 years, the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat of Cambodia, the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan, the historic centre of Macau, a former Portuguese colony in China, the deserted Indian city of Fatehpur Sikri, the stunning architecture and design of the Japanese Himeji Castle, and the important city of Samarkand, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world and known as the ‘Crossroads of Cultures’ as it was famous for its position on the traditional ‘Silk Road’. This exciting part of the world holds intrigue and appeal for many adventurous people who wish to see some of the worlds’ alternate destinations, but it also caters for those who only want to enjoy the better things in life by relaxing or lazing on the beaches of Bali or enjoy the warm waters of the Maldives.
