The United Kingdom and Ireland Region remains one of the worlds’ top ten travel destinations, and rightly so, as the countries that comprise this region hold a massive appeal for all English speaking countries around the world. Any visit to this region lingers long after your trip and fond memories are easily rekindled by friendly discussion with like-minded travellers. Although generally the weather is a little questionable the gentle landscapes and appealing pubs make up for any discomfort, and the surrounding historical heritage and culture envelops any visitor, adding to the overall interest and enjoyment of your holiday. From the dark beers, step-dancing and music of Ireland, the breathtaking natural beauty and Whiskies of Scotland, the compelling humour and heritage of England, to the deep valleys and green landscapes of Wales, and from the solitude of the Scottish Highlands to the crazy pace of hedonistic London, this region delivers an outstanding diversity of man-made and natural attractions, entertainment and culture to suit any visitor.
Whatever your interest there are numerous things to see and places to go such as the pre-historic sites of Stonehenge on the Salisbury plains, the megalithic tombs of the Burren in Ireland and the ancient village of Skara Brae in Scotland, stately homes such as Blenheim Palace and Hampton Court, beautiful castles such as those at Edinburgh and Windsor, fantastic bridges such as the ornate Tower Bridge of London and the Forth Bridge over the Firth of Forth, Scotland, contemporary structures such as the huge revolving Eye, the City Hall and the ‘Gerkin’ of London, and architectural highlights such as Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Then there are also engineering feats such as the S.S. Great Eastern, the Menai Suspension Bridge and the Roman ruins of Hadrians’ Wall, and to top it all off are the events such as the internationally famous Chelsea Flower Show, the Edinburgh Tattoo and the races of Royal Ascot. These countries are also well known for their natural wonders such as the windy heights of Snowdonia in Wales, the unusual Giants’ Causeway in Northern Ireland, the spectacular Lakes District and the Yorkshire Dales in England, and the beauty of the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland, to name a few. Touring around the region offers an ever changing and delightful landscape of green rolling hills, serene lakes and meandering rivers.
It is also a land of tradition, much of which, in England, revolves around the Queen and the Royal Family such as the Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace, the museum of the Crown Jewels within the Tower of London and the Royal Castle of Windsor. There are also events such as the ever popular annual Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race along the River Thames, the traditional Highland Games where you can see contestants tossing the caber or hurling a haggis, ceilidh dancing and pipe playing, and the annual Celtic dancing competitions of Dublin. Old customs also survive through the costumes of the Pearly King and Queen of London, the Yeoman Warders, or Beefeaters, of the Tower and the Yeoman Guards of Windsor Castle. In the country areas many agricultural shows and steam rallies occur over the summer months, drawing attention to the old ways when life was a lot simpler!!
