| Bratislavsky, Slovakia |
Dominated by the 17th century hilltop Bratislava Castle, the historic city of Bratislava is located in the heart of Europe at the crossroads of the ancient north-south and east-west trade routes. The city is the capital of Slovakia and is located in the south-west of the country where it straddles the River Danube that connects Bratislava to its neighbours in Vienna and Budapest. Bratislava is home to a mix of cultures which are integrated into the customs, cuisine and lifestyle of the city, a result of the hundreds of years that the city has been a major centre within Europe. Today Bratislava is considered to be one of Europe’s ‘old’ cities and as such boasts a unique cultural heritage a reflection of which can be seen through its beautifully restored historic quarter which contains Gothic styled and Hapsburg Baroque architecture. Bratislava attracts many visitors to Slovakia due to its history and culture, its many historic buildings, wide range of cafes and restaurants and of course the popular cruises on the River Danube. Add to this the many cultural activities of exhibitions, concerts, ballet and opera, plus the fact that Bratislava is home to over 20 galleries with permanent exhibitions and several museums, and the city can offer something for everyone. Bratislava stands within the Bratislava Region which is an area of attractive landscapes and home to several historic towns and traditional villages, castles and vineyards, and makes an ideal base from which to explore this interesting country. Like other cities straddling the Danube the two halves of Bratislava are linked by five bridges but the avid sightseer need only stay on the northern part of the city amongst the cobbled streets of the pleasant medieval old town. To the south of the river stand the drab communist-era housing estate buildings of concrete block construction which defy interest. It is the Old Town that is centred around the picturesque Hlavne namestie (Main Square) and the Hviezdosslavovo namestie (Hviezdosslav Square), and its narrow winding, cobble-stoned streets that visitors should wander around. It is here where you can see the 14th century Old City Hall which includes the Bratislava City Museum - the 13th century St. Michael’s Gate which is the only remaining city watchtower - the 13th century St Martin’s Cathedral which once served as the coronation church of the Hungarian monarchs - the 13th century Franciscan Church and the neo-Renaissance Slovak National Theatre - plus of course the four unique life-sized statues of ‘Cumil’ the peeper, ‘Schone Naci’, Napoleon’s ‘French Soldier’ and the ‘Paparazzi’ which you must look out for. There are many other attractions that may catch your eye such as the picturesque Blue Church which is officially known as St Elizabeth Church - the 18th century Grassalkovich Palace and its French garden – and the 18th century Primate’s Summer Palace. However don’t forget the Slovak National Museum - the Slovak National Gallery - the historic Devin Castle - and if it is open, the Bratislava Castle - if it isn’t open, don’t worry as it is still possible to enjoy the view. As you wander or take a trolley-bus around the city it is possible to see the Novy Most (New Bridge) which crosses the Danube and sports a UFO styled restaurant atop its structure – the Slavin War Memorial which sits on Slavin Hill and offers panoramic views of the city -the strange building of Slovak Radio’s inverted pyramid - the unique tower of Kamzik TV - and the clean lines of the Most Apollo (Apollo Bridge). With such a range of attractions, places of interest and activities on offer, Bratislava stands amongst the cities of Europe which are worthy of a visit.
