| Shanghai, China |
The city of Shanghai is located on the eastern coast of China and overlooks the East China Sea. Shanghai is China’s largest city and is recognised as the country’s main commercial and financial centre, and is often described as the ‘showpiece’ of China’s booming economy. The city is bisected by the Huangpu River which separates the older Puxi area, which remains Shanghai’s cultural, residential and commercial centre, from the more modern Pudong area which is the main financial heart of the city. Shanghai is an energetic and vibrant city with a rich heritage and provides its many visitors with an enormous range of attractions and activities which include historic and ultra modern buildings, river cruising and high speed trains, traditional markets and luxury shopping, and a huge selection of bars and restaurants. Once a small fishing and market town, Shanghai has grown to become a global city whose influence in many fields of endeavour has spread throughout the world, and today offers visitors an exciting destination where this fascinating story unfolds through exploring its numerous streets and alleyways, and visiting some of its historic houses, heritage buildings, museums, parks and attractions. For visitors to Shanghai it is easy to trace the history of the city through its diverse architecture which can be followed from the traditional Chinese styled 17th century City God Temple, the Jing’an Temple and the adjacent 16th century Yuyuan Gardens, to the numerous skyscrapers such as the 468 metre Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the 492 metre Shanghai World Financial Centre and the 421 metre Jinmao Tower which dominate the skyline of Pudong. In the early days of Shanghai the city was known for its water-towns which today can best be seen by visiting the well preserved Zhujiajiao which is known as Shanghai’s ‘Venice’, or the Qibao Ancient Town which lies just 20 kilometres from the city centre. Within the city itself however one style of architecture which developed during the mid 1800’s was the ‘shikumen’ houses which reflect the early days of colonial activities and show the mix of western and eastern cultures. These houses can be seen in Shanghai Xin Tian Di and once dominated the residential areas which today have been taken over by apartments. There are numerous examples of changing architectural styles within the city but probably the most famous are the historical buildings along the Bund which originally housed banks and trading houses from the colonial nations. Including buildings designed in Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and Renaissance styles and combined with the wharf, this waterfront location has grown to become one of Shanghai’s iconic landmarks and is recognised all over the world. As the exploration of the city continues it is interesting to look out for the great shopping along the famous Nanjing Road, take time out and visit the Shanghai Museum, have fun at the Shanghai Disneyland, wander around the Shanghai Botanical Gardens, enjoy a Huangpu River Cruise, take a ride on the ultra-high-speed Maglev Train which travels over 400 kilometres per hour or slow things right down and experience the tranquility of a visit to the Jade Buddha Temple. One thing perhaps is worth making an effort to see is the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum which is the most visited museum in the whole of China with an estimated 3 million visitors a year.
