Beijing, China
Beijing is one of the ‘ancient capitals of China’ and today remains the capital of the People’s Republic. It is an exciting, vibrant city and the major political and cultural heart of the nation being recognised as one of the world’s great historical centres and home to the main national institutions, numerous cultural and historic monuments of the country. Beijing is a huge, busy and bustling city, a major transport hub, a major industrial area and of course a major cultural centre. Boasting the newest and grandest of Olympic facilities, Beijing traces its rich heritage over hundreds of years and this can best be followed through the numerous museums, parks and gardens, and architectural developments which range from historic city walls, palaces, temples, pagodas and bridges, to modern masterpieces which adorn this amazing city.
Beijing was, during the 15th century, a walled city and although much of it was destroyed through earlier modernization programs, parts of the walls remain and can be seen at the Ming Dynasty City Wall Site Park in the Chongwen District. The walls of course were protecting some of the city’s landmarks including the stunning Forbidden City, which is the former Imperial Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the surrounding Beihai Park with its classic Chinese gardens. Other major attractions include the U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Site of the Summer Palace which overlooks Kunming Lake; the world famous Tiananmen Square which is the largest square in the world and home to the Zhengyangmen that is one of the original historic city gates, the Great Hall of the People, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, the Monument to the People’s Heroes and the National Museum of China which focuses on the arts and history of the country. There are also numerous religious sites including the outstanding 15th century Temple of Heaven which is a listed U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Site; the Yonghe Temple or Lama Temple, which is recognised as one of the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world; the Temple of the Earth, the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Moon and of course the 14th century Temple of Confucius, just to name a few. As visitors explore the city it is possible to see so many other attractions such as the thirteen storey, 60 metre high, 12th century Pagoda of Tianning Temple, the elegant Jade Belt Bridge, the incredible Beijing Ancient Observatory, the stunning Beijing Botanical Gardens and the Beijing Zoo which is specifically known for its Giant Pandas. For interested parties it is worth noting that Beijing is also home to almost 150 museums and art galleries with the three most popular being the Capital Museum, the National Art Museum of China and the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution. However of special interest is the Beijing Art Museum as it is housed in the important Wanshou Temple which is a listed Beijing ‘Key Cultural Heritage Site’ and therefore it is possible to see and experience two things at once. For shoppers Beijing offers amazing opportunities through its many giant malls and numerous markets with popular locations including Wangfujing Street which is the most famous and has operated in the same location for 700 years; Qianmen Street, which is located near Tiananmen Square, is full of Chinese atmosphere and traditional culture; the Silk Market that sells everything as well as silk products; the Hongqiao Market which is a fun shopping experience and is located near the Temple of Heaven; the Yashow Market for great prices; and the Panjiayuan Market which is the largest antiques market in China.
