Domme

Dordogne, Aquitaine, France
The small commune of Domme is located on the southern bank of the Dordogne River in the Region of Aquitaine in south-western France. It is one of France’s original fortified villages and was built during the 13th century. Standing 150 metres above the river, the village is perched on a cliff overhanging the open fields of the Dordogne Valley and is a good example of a planned, medieval, fortified commune which are known as bastides. Considered to be one of the most beautiful villages of the Dordogne, Domme retains most of its ancient ramparts including three fortified gateways, with the entry to the village through the impressive main gate which lies at the bottom of the main street, or Le Grand Rue. The three gates include the main gate, which is called the Porte des Tours, and which is flanked by two guard towers that were used as a prison in the 14th century, the Porte de la Combe and the Porte del Bos. Within the towers of the Porte des Tours it is interesting to note that during the 14th century some of the Knights Templar were held prisoner in Domme and they have left their marks here by carving religious symbols on the stone walls.

Standing at the top of a relatively steep hill, Domme enjoys exceptional views over the valley and the surrounding countryside and offers visitors an insight into the small rural communities which once dotted this attractive landscape. The village retains many attractive old houses that are built of the local honey-coloured sandstone which create an enjoyable environment that is worth a little investigation. The village of just over 1,000 residents is centred around the market place, the Place de la Halle, in which can be found the 19th century reconstruction of the 16th century stone-columned covered Market Hall under which can be found the local caves. The Grottes de Domme contains several prehistoric engravings and has remained a major asset during the village’s varied history as the caves have been used for shelter during periods of conflict. Domme also boasts a little Church, which is beautiful in its simplicity and has a decorative stained glass window located above the door, a 17th century City Hall, beautiful Public Gardens and the small Museum of Art and Traditions.
