| Napoli, Campania, Italy |
Sorrento is a vibrant and lively town located on the cliff tops of the northern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsular, south of Naples. The town overlooks the city of Naples, the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. A major tourist destination due to its strategic location, the city is within easy distance of some of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions, such as the beautiful Amalfi Coast, the Roman ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii, the Greek ruins of Paestum, the islands of Capri and Ischia, the hiking trails of Monte Faito and the historic city of Naples.
The town itself can trace its history back to the Oscans of 600 B.C., followed by influences of the Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, Goths, Lombards, Normans and Spanish, eventually becoming part of the Neopolitan Republic, and then ultimately becoming part of the Italian Republic in 1861. Today the city is home to a population of 16,500, who live in this old city built up over 2500 years of continual use. Within these historic narrow streets and alleyways, you can find many buildings reflecting the many influences and cultures that have dominated the town, and which create the special atmosphere of Sorrento. Take a look at the 10th century Basilica di San Antonino, the 11th century Sorrento Cathedral, St. Francis Cloisters and the Sedil Dominova. Sorrento is also a centre of lemon and orange groves, from which has made the area famous for its Limoncello, a traditional yellow aperitif.
Did you know that Sorrento is famous for its marquetry!!
