Donegal lies at the mouth of Donegal Bay and is overshadowed by the Bluestack Mountains. It is home to only 2,453 people (2002 census), and the centre for south Donegal. The area contains many sandy beaches, some with fine surf, and is a good base for hill walking in the Bluestack Mountains. There is evidence of prehistoric habitation in the area, with the remains of round forts and other earth works overlooking the town. Donegal Castle, built by the O’Donnel’s in the 15th century, has been recently restored and is fully furnished, including Persian rugs and French tapestries. The castle is well worth a visit, as is the Railway Heritage Museum and the Donegal Craft Village, which displays the work of the local craftsmen and women, such as sculpture, metalwork, batik and jewellery.
Donegal has its fair share of pubs, so if you are in town in the evenings, pop along and have a great sing song with the locals, you will be more than welcome!!
