Lying on the banks of the River Erne, Belleek is a small, quiet, picturesque village of only 836 (2001 census) which is located on the borders of County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, and County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. This location makes Belleek the most westerly village in Northern Ireland, and by default, in the United Kingdom.
Although small, the village is world renowned for being home to Belleek Pottery, Ireland’s oldest pottery, established in 1857, which is also one of Ireland’s top 5 visitors attractions!! Belleek Pottery attracts over 70,000 visitors per year, which in turn has caused the village to thrive, being home to a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs, offering good ale and traditional Irish music. The village is also well known for its picturesque location on the River Erne, and its close proximity to Lough Erne, which is a particularly scenic waterway, only 4 kilometres upstream. This Lakeland area is also renowned for its great fishing!!
If you are in the area, take time out and see the Belleek Pottery, which contains a museum, showroom, tea room and a theatre, or the Erne Gateway Centre, an exhibition showing the story of the Lough Erne, from mythological times to the present day. Maybe enjoy a walk along the forested trails around the ruins of Castle Caldwell, built 1611.
As you can see, Belleek offers a quiet refuge from the madness of the world, so take some time out and enjoy your stay!!
