| Kerry, South, Ireland |
Killarney lies deep in a valley in the MacGillicuddy Reeks, besides the Lakes of Killarney, in County Kerry, south-western Ireland. This magnificent, stunning and mystic landscape, has been drawing visitors to town for three hundred years, making Killarney one of Ireland’s oldest holiday destinations!!
Known as the hub of the Ring of Kerry, Killarney’s main industry is still tourism, with the town having more accommodation than any other town in Ireland, except Dublin!! The town itself, with a population of 13,426 (2006 census), is well supplied with shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and entertainment, adding to the historical and natural attractions in the area, making the whole tourist experience one not to be forgotten.
Things to see in the area are, the spectacular lakes, with Ross Castle on the shores of Lough Lein. A fully restored medieval castle, built in the 15th century by the O’Donoghue Ross Chieftains. Muckross Abbey, founded by the Franciscans in the 15th century, now only a ruin as it was plundered by Cromwell’s men in 1652, but still a remarkable building. Muckross House, built 1843, a magnificent Victorian mansion, showing how the ‘upstairs and the downstairs’ people lived!! Complete with great gardens, Muckross House is the centre of the Killarney National Park, having been given to the state, from the Muckross estate, with a large land entitlement in 1932.
There are many other attractions to see, so pop along to the local tourist information centre, located on Beech Road, Killarney, and have a look at the range of local attractions!!
