| Milano, Lombardy, Italy |
Milan is located on the plains of the River Po in the region of Lombardy in northern Italy, and is the country’s powerhouse, being the hub of the wealthy and productive north!! It is the largest city in Italy at 7.4 million, and the economic and business heart of the nation. Although Rome is the capital and administrative centre, Milan is where the financial centre lies and home of the Italian Stock Exchange. Famous as a world leader in fashion and design, the city is an exciting tourist destination as it is a busy, progressive city and a major social and cultural centre of the country. Its central location has the added benefit of easy access to some of the most popular tourist destinations of the Italian Lakes District, the Alps, Venice and Genoa!!
Having had an exciting history, the city has been left with many beautiful pieces of art and historic buildings like the Cathedral of Milan (14th to 19th century), the second largest Gothic Cathedral in the world where you can climb to the roof up a 919 step external staircase and see the awesome views of the city. South of the Duomo will be found the Palazzo Reale (the Royal Palace), or maybe have a look at the impressive Sforza Castle (14th century), which houses an art collection including works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea Mantegna. There is also the Church and Convent of the Santa Maria delle Grazie, where you can see Leonardo da Vinci’s famous ‘Last Supper’!! Or the more recent, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, reputably the world’s first shopping mall (19th century) where you can peruse boutiques of famous labels and the most important bookshops in the city!! The Galleria is an enclosed shopping arcade with an iron and glass arched roof, which was the largest in its day, and which connects two important parts of the city, the Piazza del Duomo, where the beautiful Cathedral is located, and the Piazza della Scala, where you will find the La Scala Theatre, one of the world’s most famous opera houses!!
The city has an extensive range of social activities, many cafes and restaurants for every taste, museums and art galleries to keep everybody happy. Getting around Milan is quick and easy due to a comprehensive network of subways, buses and trams.
