| Galway, West, Ireland |
Galway, with its cobbled streets and historic buildings, is a vibrant and sophisticated city, considered by some to be Ireland’s capital of the arts, and hosts many colourful festivals. Capital of Galway County, the city with a population of 71,983 (2006 census), is a magnet for tourists, wishing to experience the ‘real’ Ireland, with many areas of the county maintaining Irish language and traditions!! Galway is also the gateway to the mid-west, where you can experience Ireland’s wildest and remote regions of the rugged, windswept Connemara and the Aran Islands, just 50 kilometres offshore!!
Ireland’s fastest growing city, Galway has become a thriving centre, whilst still maintaining a laid back vibe!! The city has grown despite many set backs caused by external forces, from the first Viking visit in 927 A.D., to the Normans in 1235, and the fires that decimated the wooden town in 1473 and 1500, to the present day, where the city is a delightful combination of history and 20th century prosperity!! Originally a medieval walled settlement, the heart of the city is compact and easy to walk around. Wander past the medieval walls, Eyre Square, Lynch’s Castle, the Long Walk and the Spanish Arch. Come and see some of our festivals, delight in Shop Street, where you can relax on our ‘cappuccino strip’, soak up the atmosphere, listen to the buskers, and decide which pub for lunch!! Or maybe plan the next attraction, will it be the Galway Market, held each Saturday, besides the St. Nicholas Catholic Church, the largest remaining medieval church in Ireland, or a quick visit to the museum, or maybe a delightful boat trip on the River Corrib!! It’s all here, it’s a delight, kick back and enjoy the ‘Irishness’ of it all!!
For your information.
The Jazz Festival – February. Cuirt Literature Festival – Easter. Galway Art Festival – early to mid July. Galway Race Festival – the last week in July. Barboro Children’s Festival – October.
