Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand
The popular tourist destination of Hanmer Springs is a picturesque spa resort town which is located approximately 130 kilometres north of Christchurch and stands in a broad valley sheltered by wooded hills. Within this beautiful a rural area, the thermal springs were found by the first European in1859 and were used by a few locals and serviced by an old wooden dressing shed. The spa resort developed around the thermal springs in the late 19th century and due to its proximity to Christchurch became a popular spa town and weekend retreat. Today Hanmer Springs has grown into a busy alpine spa village and is known primarily for its well serviced thermal pools, massage, health and beauty treatments, but also offers additional outdoor activities including extreme outdoor sports, high country adventure touring and snow skiing at the Hanmer Springs Ski Area and the slopes of nearby Mt Lyford.

Historically Hanmer Springs stands at the centre of productive farmlands which over the years has diversified into forestry and more recently, tourism. Located within a magnificent mountain area of alpine rivers and forests, Hanmer Springs offers visitors a full range of outdoor activities from gentle walks, rugged hikes, exhilarating mountain bike trails, scenic flights and fresh water fishing to the extreme activities available in the nearby Thrillseekers Canyon of bungy jumping, jet boating, off road quad bikes, white water rafting, paintballing and clay bird shooting. Hanmer Springs is also a transport hub as it is located on the main northern route over the Southern Alps via Lewis Pass which stands close to the small spa town of Maruia Springs, and lies within the Alpine Pacific Triangle, a popular touring area on the rugged east coast.

This delightful, friendly and hospitable rural settlement of approximately 760 residents offers visitors a diverse selection of accommodation, cafes, bars, restaurants, galleries, craft shops and boutique shopping. The local i-SITE Visitor Centre provides local detailed information on the large range of trails and tracks which surround the area, such as the short walk to the top of Conical Hill which offers stunning views over Hanmer Springs and the surrounding open and forested countryside.
