| Limerick, West, Ireland |
Lying besides the Maigue River, just 12 kilometres south of Limerick, you will find Adare, thought by some to be the prettiest village in Ireland!! The village is snuggled in a wooded setting, and dates back to Norman times, the river quietly flows under a beautiful stone bridge, and the streets are lined with thatched cottages and solid stone houses, medieval churches and castle ruins.
Originally settled near a ford for crossing the river, Adare grew to become a market town, and a major centre in its hey day. At one time Adare was home to Desmond Castle and three monasteries, as can be seen by the ruins of a Franciscan Abbey, founded in 1464 and built by Thomas, Earl of Kildare, a Trinitarian Abbey, founded 1230, which is now the Catholic Parish Church, and an Augustinian Abbey, founded in 1315 and built by John, Earl of Kildare, which has been converted into a school house and a church. Desmond Castle can be seen by guided tour only, as it is undergoing restoration.
Today, with a population of approximately 1000, Adare is a popular tourist destination, and has been designated a Heritage Town in County Limerick. If you need more information, pop in to the Adare Heritage Centre, in the middle of the village. It tells the unique history of the area, from 1233 to the present time, through model enactments and audio visual aids.
