Kilkenny spans the Nore River, in the central northern region of County Kilkenny, which is located in south-eastern Ireland. The city is steeped in history, dominated by superb ancient buildings, and yet is famous as a centre of contemporary art and culture. The city is only small, being home to 8625 people (2006 census), and has developed as a creative centre, being home to many craft and design shops, offering knitwear, leather goods, jewellery, candles and pottery items. Add to this the popular restaurants and lively nightlife, all makes Kilkenny a place to visit!!
Kilkenny is a thriving, cosmopolitan merchant city, and being compact, makes it possible to experience much of the town by just walking. Why not see the highlights of the city with the help of a local guide, by enjoying one of the walking tours which leave regularly from the Tourist Office, located within the Shee Alms House (built 1582)!! Then spend some time at your own pace to see some of the superb historic sites, such as Kilkenny Castle, built in the 12th century, with its magnificent gardens, or St. Canice’s Cathedral, built between 1202 and 1285. Maybe for something a little more in depth, try a visit to the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, housed in Rothe House, a Tudor merchants house of three separate townhouses with interconnecting courtyards!! Perhaps something not so old, why not pay a visit to the Kilkenny Design Centre and Workshops, an exhibition of contemporary arts and crafts located within Kilkenny Castle!!
Whatever you do in Kilkenny, you will be welcomed by the friendly and helpful people of the city, which will make your holiday one to be remembered!!
