| Rhein-Hunsruck-Kreis, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany |
This lovely little town of 17,000 residents stands on the western bank of the majestic River Rhine in the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate. The town is located very close to the biggest bend on the river, which is known as the Bopparder Hamm, in an area known as Middle-Rhine, approximately 25 kilometres south of Koblenz. Backed by the forest and vine covered Hunsruck Hills, Boppard stands in the Valley of Lorelie and is a very popular tourist destination due to its historic and picturesque town centre complete with traditional half timbered houses, the Romanesque St Severus Church, which dominates the town, and the re-built Carmelite Church. The town lies within the beautiful Rhine Gorge area which is today classified as a U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Site and is known for its many medieval hill-top castles and vineyards and is commonly referred to as the ‘Romantic Rhine’. Boppard is heavily frequented by river boats which bring many of its estimated 1 million visitors to town!!
The town was settled over 2,000 years ago and today offers many signs of its previous history from the oldest preserved Roman fort walls and towers of the city, when Boppard was known as Fort Bodobrica, to its Medieval city walls and the 13th century St Severus Church which has been constructed on top of a former Roman spa. During the Middle Ages Boppard was influenced by different royal families, princes, electors and Bishops, and became a considerable centre of commerce and shipping. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Boppard was recognised by the Emperor when it became an Imperial Free City. The regional history of Boppard is displayed within the Kurfurstliche Burg, or Old Castle, which was erected in 1327 as a river customs collection point, from which the town received a substantial income. The museum contains artifacts from the Stone and Bronze Ages, and exhibits items from the Roman and Franconian periods including objects up to the 19th century. The museum maintains a special focus on Michael Thonet who was born in Boppard in the 18th century and who is regarded as a pioneer of furniture design and inventor of Bentwood furniture.
Boppard area is notable for its fine wines and the Boppard Wine Festival takes place during late September each year.
