New York City
Show Map
New York, Mid-Atlantic, United States of America
New York City, fondly referred to as the ‘Big Apple’, is by far the largest and most important city in the U.S.A. It is an exciting, vibrant and cosmopolitan destination and attracts almost 50 million tourists every year who visit to enjoy the city’s hustle and bustle, and the immense diversity of attractions and activities. New York City is spread across five unique boroughs with each having its own feeling and culture, and includes Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. Central to these is the most popular Manhattan Island, which lies between the main Hudson River and the East River, and on which famous place names can be found such as Central Park, Park Avenue, Times Square, Wall Street, Fifth Avenue and Broadway to name a few. Midtown Manhattan is the major retail and commercial heart of New York where many splendid architectural sites meet the eye such as the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, the unmistakable United Nations Headquarters and of course the Rockefeller Centre. Boasting some of the world’s most spectacular shopping, Fifth Avenue is a ‘not to be missed’ destination with all of the major brand names in retail having exposure between 42nd and 60th Streets. Outlets such as Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany’s certainly should not be rushed through, and the famous toy store of FAO Schwartz is an important stop for all of the family. Here of course the giant piano made famous through the movie ‘Big’ can be seen and attracts visitors from around the globe. Another area of interest which should be mentioned is the city’s numerous museums and galleries which are recognised as some of the finest in the world. Notable collections are exhibited in the American Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Frick Collection, The Guggenheim and as an introduction to New York City, the Museum of the City of New York. Of course Broadway, which is synonymous with the American theatre industry, beckons those who are wishing to be entertained with first class theatre and musicals. Sadly it is also worth showing respect for the city and its citizens by visiting the memorial site of the Twin Towers. Here on 11th of September 2001, the Twin Towers, which housed the World Trade Centre, were completely destroyed during a terrorist attack that killed nearly 3,000 innocent victims.

New York lies at the mouth of the Hudson River and overlooks New York Harbour and its islands with Liberty Island being one of the most famous as it is home to the iconic and unforgettable ‘Statue of Liberty’. Originally given to the people of the United States by the people of France on the centenary of American independence in 1876, the statue was fabricated in France and shipped to the U.S. where it was assembled and dedicated in 1886. Today the statue has been listed as a U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Site and recognised as a highly potent symbol of liberty, peace, human rights, democracy and opportunity. Also located in New York Harbour is Ellis Island which is the site of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The old immigration centre processed an estimated 12 million newcomers between 1892 and 1954, and today 100 million Americans can trace their ancestry to the immigrants who were processed through the Ellis Island facility. The number of fascinating attractions in this incredible city are endless, so waste no more time and begin your exploration.
