| Bali, Lesser Sunda Islands (Bali), Indonesia |
Surrounded by gently rolling rice paddy fields and the nearby limestone gorges of the Ayung and Wos Rivers, the small town of Obud is often considered to be the cultural heart of Bali. Established during the 8th century around the Gunung Lebah Temple, Ubud’s original claim to fame was as a source of medicinal herbs, eventually becoming a centre of art and culture during the 14th century. In the early 20th century the Balinese Royal Family helped to develop Ubud as a centre of art and culture by inviting aspiring artists to establish themselves here. During the 1960’s Ubud was ‘discovered’ as a popular tourist destination, and since then has grown rapidly to become one of the major attractions in Indonesia. Although tourism plays a major role in the local economy and is the major occupation for many people in Ubud, the pursuit of art and crafts remains at the core of its existence. Today the small original village of Obud has grown to encapsulate fourteen neighbouring villages, each still with its headman and ancient temple. Located in the cool mountain foothills 20 kilometres north of Denpasar, Obud is the home of the Balinese Royal family. Ubun today maintains a flourishing crafts centre, providing visitors with hundreds of shops selling antiques, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings and jewellery. It also offers a diverse range of popular attractions which include a number of palaces, ancient temples, museums and art galleries, as well as an excellent local market.
