Yallingup is a small coastal village of 300 people, on the windy south-west coast of Western Australia, 264 kilometres south of Perth. It lies in what is known as the Cape region of the south coast, between Cape Naturaliste in the north, to Cape Leeuwin in the south, and is washed by the Indian Ocean. The town is considered a Western Australian seaside gem, as it remains free from major developments, and retains its village atmosphere.
The town is well located, being a popular destination for surfers, as Yallingup Beach with its beautiful white sands, is regarded as one of W.A.’s best and most easily accessible surfing beaches.
Just a short distance north of town lies the Ngilgi Caves, one of the areas most visited attractions since 1901. The caves are part of an extreme network of caves that run through a geological ridge which lies within the Leeuwin and Naturaliste National Park. Part of the cave network contains the Devil’s Lair which has archaeological significance, containing fossil remains of 35 mammalian species, 10 of which are now extinct. The cave was named Devils’ Lair, as remains of the extinct Tasmanian Devil were found. The caves are also important as some bones showing evidence of having been used for tools, indicating human activity, were found!!
In addition the Margaret River vineyards and wineries are only a short drive away along scenic roads. The Margaret River Region consists of 200 vineyards and 80 wineries, which produce 3% of all Australian wines. That doesn’t sound much, but when you consider that this 3% makes up to 20% of the Australian Premium Wine market, then you are talking quality!! This character and quality can be found in their fruit intense Chardonays, rich Semillons, soft Merlots and robust Cabernets. Why not have a tasting!!
Add to this the proximity to the Leeuwin & Naturaliste National Park, with its beautiful sea cliffs, windswept headlands, stunning scenery and fantastic beaches, then the area has it all just to hand!! The National Park covers 15,500 hectares which can now be enjoyed by using the Cape to Cape Track, a 135 kilometre walking track which passes along the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. The park is renowned for its stunning coastal scenery, wildflowers, and its stands of Karri and Jarrah. Cape Naturaliste has a lighthouse and whale viewing platform from which unsurpassed views of Geographe Bay can be enjoyed. Humpback and Southern Right Whales can be seen travelling north, passing by during the winter months. From May to August for Humpbacks, and May to November for Southern Right.
Taking into account the numerous high quality restaurants, accommodation facilities, galleries and craftwork by local artisans, the Cape Region of Western Australia is an attractive location for that long awaited touring weekend away or holiday, and Yallingup is a great place to make your base!!
