Corrigin, Western Australia is a town with a couple of differences!! Holder of the World Record for ‘Dogs in Utes’, and also home of the unique Dog Cemetery, makes Corrigin just that bit unusual and worthy of a closer look!!
The town is situated in the central wheatbelt region of Western Australia, 223 kilometres east of Perth. With a population of 725 friendly locals (2001 census), Corrigin is a key agricultural centre for the district, which is focused on wheat and sheep farming. The town is also the administrative centre for the area, with the Corrigin Shire Offices, in Lynch Street, also being the Tourist Information Centre. There are shopping facilities, bank, hotel, and motel available in town. Each year Corrigin hosts the local Agricultural Show.
If you are in town have a look at the Dog Cemetery, where to date 80 loved pets have been laid to rest. It’s an unusual place, but if you have ever had a ‘best friend’, it is a wonderful idea!! On Sundays, or by appointment, The Pioneer Museum houses some early pioneering farm machinery, a miniature railway and a steam train for rides!! Or a wander around the Corrigin Craft Cottage, which displays and sells high quality local crafts, preserves and Kyalla Yabbies!!
The local community hosts the Dogs in Utes event, which currently holds the World Record of 1527, set in April 2002. The entrants came from far and wide, great stuff!! They raised $60,000 in 2002, and $80,000 in 2005. The money was given to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and local organizations.
Corrigin is a popular stopping point for travellers to Wave Rock, to have a wander, stretch your legs and have a cup of tea, and maybe buy that odd souvenir. The local area is well known for its wildflower displays during September and November.
