Established as a centre for sailing ships trading in sandalwood, Bech-de-Mer (sea cucumbers) and copra in the 19th century, Savusavu lies in a large, picturesque bay, with calm, deep water, which today still attracts sailing ships from around the world looking for paradise!! With a population of approximately 5000, Savusavu is still a centre for copra processing and export, but above all is the main tourist attraction, commercial and service centre for the south-eastern region of Vanua Levu, Fijis’ second largest island.
Savusavu is basically a one street town, with several shops offering a variety of products from groceries to hardware, banks, Post Office, library and eateries. The town is nestled between green hills and Nakama Creek, and offers the visitor a diverse range of accommodation. People are drawn to Savusavu for those looking for that ‘Hidden Paradise’, as it is also known, a place just removed from the hustle and bustle, and still retaining that quieter pace to life!! Dominated by Savusavu Bay, the area is teeming with fish and coral reefs, fringed by untouched mountains and old copra plantations, an ideal centre for scuba diving, sport fishing, snorkeling, sailing and kayaking, a real adventure playground!!
One of Savusavu’s claims to fame is due to the volcanic nature of the island. Along the beach, steam rises from the rocks on the west end, and hot springs can be seen behind the supermarket, where at times it is possible to see food being cooked!!
Savusavu is easily accessible, having a domestic airport just 3 kilometres from town serviced from Nadi and Suva, and also roll-on/roll-off ferries from Suva and Taveuni!! So take a quick trip, be welcomed by friendly locals, have a Fiji Bitter at the Planters Club, and relax, you are in that ‘Hidden Paradise’ you have been looking for!!
