| Queensland, Australia |
Port Douglas is a small seaside town, 70 kilometres north of Cairns, along a beautiful coastal road which has spectacular views over the hillside and Coral Sea. The township has a charming, friendly village atmosphere, and a typical north Queensland ‘she’ll be right mate’ relaxed attitude to life. The town is a busy tourist hub, primarily due to being so close to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree National Park. The local economy is based around tourism, with many hotel and resort complexes within the town, supported by a good, diverse range of shops, cafés and great restaurants.
The town is built at the end of an isthmus, which has a small hill called Flagstaff Hill, from which awesome views over Four Mile Beach and the Coral Sea can be enjoyed. On the other side of the peninsula are the quiet waters of the Dickson Inlet, a lovely natural harbour and marina.
The town was originally established in the 1870’s to give access to the goldfields at Hodgkinson River, which had particularly difficult access. When the gold rush finished, people left the area, the township reduced in size, and became a sleepy little seaside town. Sugar cane growing in the Mossman area became the backbone of the local economy, and the sugar cane mill opened in 1893, and has continued to operate to this day. Port Douglas stayed a quiet little town until 1988, when the Sheraton Mirage opened up the area to tourists, and since then has continued to grow into an international tourist destination.
With good weather all year round, average summer temperature of 31 degrees centigrade, and average winter temperature of 26 degrees centigrade, beautiful palm tree lined beaches, and the proximity to the Reef and the tropical Daintree rainforest, Port Douglas has much to offer.
