San Francisco is located on the western coast of the U.S. and is the fourth largest city in the State of California. The city encircles San Francisco Bay, an area which houses almost 7.5 million residents, while the downtown area is located on the San Francisco Peninsula. The peninsula overlooks the San Francisco Bay to the north and east, and the roaring Pacific Ocean to the west, and is connected to the mainland by the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and the 7 kilometre long Oakland Bay Bridge. San Francisco is known for its beautiful natural, hilly setting, mild climate and its tolerance to different people’s way of life. It is a dynamic, vibrant and exciting city, a major centre of finance and culture, and considered by many to be one of the most livable cities in the U.S.A. Home to a free thinking and liberated community, San Francisco offers visitors a range of attractions which range from the rather neat Lombard Street with its eight hairpin-bends to the maze of the city’s Chinatown district which is the largest and oldest in the U.S.A. For visitors touring, San Francisco also provides a fantastic base from which to explore the stunning State of California.
Being located on the peninsula means the city is almost surrounded by water and is backed by the distant Sierra Nevada Mountains, and positioned on the coast with the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south. Across the Golden Gate Bridge the scenic northern Marin County is known for its stunning Marin Headlands which add an impressive backdrop to the landscape when crossing over the bay. San Francisco is also connected to East Bay via the Bay Bridge, which runs via Yerba Buena Island. The city is located in a hilly area with many suburbs taking the names of the hills on which they are built. This has led visitors to feel familiar with the place names which include Twin Peaks, Pacific Heights, Strawberry Hills and Red Rock to name a few. San Francisco Bay contains several islands with none as well known as Alcatraz, which is also called the ‘Rock’. Alcatraz has become one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist attractions with visitors flocking to see inside the notorious prison, the remains of the earlier military base and the first lighthouse to have been built on the west coast. Alcatraz is reached from the Pier 33 at Fisherman’s Wharf, which is part of the original settlement of San Francisco and remains a working fishing port. Fisherman’s Wharf is a major tourist attraction and provides a large selection of shops and restaurants in Ghirardelli Square and Pier 39, and if you are interested the Musee Mecanique, Wax Museum or Ripley’s ‘Believe It Or Not’ Museum. Adjacent to Pier 39 can be found the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park which includes a fleet of historic vessels, and a museum which is housed in an Art Deco styled bathhouse of the 1930’s. Another popular attraction which is easily seen in this area of San Francisco is the Fish Market and Wharves Heritage Streetcar Line, which operates original period streetcars from around the world that adds a little more colour to this already colourful city. Highlights of San Francisco have become part of the popular ‘49 Mile Scenic Drive’, which was created in 1938 as part of the Golden Gate International Exposition. The route is clearly marked by large blue and white signs with a sea gull prominently displayed. The drive passes many well known and popular attractions such as Coit Tower, Ferry Building, Palace of Fine Arts, Asian Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Chinatown, Japantown, Transamerica Pyramid, Legion of Honor and Lombard Street, and includes great views of the city, Golden Gate Bridge and the Oakland Bay Bridge.
