The cosmopolitan and vibrant city of Los Angeles is the second largest in the U.S.A. after New York, and is home to approximately 3.8 million residents with around 18 million living within the greater metropolitan area. Known by most as LA, Los Angeles has also been called ‘La La Land’ or ‘Tinsel Town’ due to its connections with the exciting and dynamic movie industry which was established here in the 1920’s. Sprawling along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, LA stretches from Malibu to Long Beach and is overlooked by the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains. LA is formed of a vast flat grid of streets, with the downtown area being comprised of a cluster of imposing skyscrapers which are located approximately 25 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean coastline. Popularised through countless TV shows and movies, LA is home to many familiar sounding suburbs which include Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Venice Beach, Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley. Attracting approximately 24 million tourists (LA Tourism Stats 2009), LA remains a popular tourist destination due to its connections with the movie industry with visitors flocking here to enjoy a tour of Hollywood, see the highly visible iconic landmark of the ‘Hollywood’ sign on the nearby hills, walk down Hollywood Boulevard to see the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’ or visit Universal Studios. Others of course arrive to be seen sauntering along Rodeo Drive of Beverly Hills to satisfy their passion for fashion, or enjoy the unsurpassed shopping opportunities which LA provides. LA is known as a world-class shopping destination and offers visitors a huge variety of shopping centres and malls including the Beverly Centre, Melrose Avenue, and the California Market Centre which is located within the Fashion District. Home to the ever popular Hollywood Bowl, numerous museums including the J. Paul Getty Museums, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Norton Simon Collection, LA is also a major centre of culture. Providing tourists with the Hollywood and Highland Centre, visitors to LA can also enjoy live theatre at the Kodak Theatre, which has been made famous through its use for the Academy Awards Ceremonies, and the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre which is world famous for the collection of nearly 200 celebrities hand and foot-prints which decorate the forecourt outside. Being located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean as it is, LA is also home to the Marina del Ray which overlooks Santa Monica Bay, and is considered to be one of the largest man-made small boat harbours in the U.S. Adjacent to the marina is located Venice Beach, well known for its Ocean Front Walk, along which performers, artists and street vendors create an entertaining mix of local colour which has become one of the city’s popular tourist destinations. Venice Beach of course extends to the north where it becomes Santa Monica Beach, home to the famed resort town of Santa Monica and the well known pier upon which the Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome can be seen. Today the amusement complex is a listed National Historic Landmark.
Providing a perfect base from which to explore southern California, LA offers visitors easy access to the nearby theme parks of the Disneyland Complex, the fascinating Universal Studio Complex and the Knott’s Berry Farm Theme Park. In addition the historic city of San Diego is located less than 200 kilometres to the south, while the popular Newport Beach lies only 65 kilometres away. Here visitors can enjoy the thrills and spills of surfing, try their hand at deep water sports fishing or even enjoy a cruise to whale-watch.
