Fraser Island is one of Australia’s unique natural wonders, and is only 200 kilometres north of Brisbane. It is the largest sand island in the world, being 123 kilometres long, and covering an area of 184,000 hectares, with some of the sand dunes reaching 240 metres above sea level. There are 100 freshwater lakes, ancient rain forests, long stretches of white sandy beaches and multi-coloured sand cliffs. The surf side of the island is called 75 Mile Beach, and is actually a road, and has a speed limit of 80 K.P.H, and normal road rules apply. It also acts as a runway, and planes have right of way. The island has several sandy tracks leading to lakes, rain forest and places of interest, and these have a 35 K.P.H. limit. The island is strictly 4X4 only.
The island is a World Heritage Listed Area, and is part of the Great Sandy Desert National Park, and is known for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded, and the dingo can be often seen. Off shore there are dugongs, dolphins, turtles, huge rays and tiger sharks, and strong currents on the east side, so be careful! Whales can be seen off shore between August and October, as many humpbacks visit Hervey Bay, which is just north east of Fraser, on their journey south to Antarctica after calving.
Central Station is a camping ground and Ranger Station. Lake Mc Kenzie is supposedly the most beautiful lake, 150 hectares in area and 100 metres above sea level. Lake Birrabeen is well known for the best picnic area. Eli Creek, a fast flowing fresh water creek, can be visited while driving along the 75 Mile Beach, where you can see, sand blows, sand cliffs, and the wreck of the Maheno, which was driven ashore in 1935. At the end of the beach, you can have a much needed dip in the water at Champagne Pools.
Fraser Island can be reached by ferry from Rivers Head, 17 kilometres from Hervey Bay, and Inskip, near Rainbow Bay. Remember Fraser Island is a remote part of Australia and Medical services are limited, always carry a well stocked First Aid kit.
