Hayman Island is the most northerly island of the Whitsunday Group of islands. It is one of the closest islands to the Great Barrier Reef, being approximately only one kilometre away. The island is quiet hilly, covered in tropical native bushland, mainly consisting of eucalypt and hoop pines. There are several meandering walking paths around the island and to the crest of the hills, where rocky outcrops appear. These lookout points present fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding islands and reefs, which are covered with shimmering, clear, light and dark blue/ green colours of the Coral Sea. The island is surrounded with shallow waters and reefs which can be explored by glass bottomed kayak, where you can catch glimpses of multi coloured fish and corals.
Hayman Island has one very impressive hotel complex situated on a beautiful crescent shaped sandy beach on the south-west side of the island. The hotel is surrounded by verdant tropical gardens, which assist the building in melding into the natural environment. There is a small and functional marina, which transports visitors from Hamilton Island, which is approximately one hour or 20 kilometres away. There is also a helicopter landing area, for visitors and day trippers to the outer reef.
