| Roma, Lazio, Italy |
Legend has it that Rome was founded on the Palatine Hill on April 21st 753 B.C. by Romulus, who became the first King of Rome. Later as the town grew it encompassed other population centres that had grown on the surrounding hills, and the ‘City of Seven Hills’ was created. The town grew into the first centre of the Roman Republic, then of the Roman Empire, then it became the capital of the Christian faith in the 4th century, and today one of the world’s major metropolises!! Rome in all its endeavours has had, and is still having, major impacts throughout the world, from the expansive days of the Roman Empire to the power of the Roman Catholic Church, millions of people over hundreds of years have been affected by decisions made in this city!!
Sometimes referred to as the ‘Eternal City’, Rome is the capital of the Italian Republic and is located in the Lazio Region on the central west coast of the country. Home to an estimated 2.7 million residents, the city is known as a world leader in fashion, design and culture, besides being the world’s home of the Roman Catholic Church, as the enclave of the State of the Vatican City lies within the city boundaries. Rome was once the capital of the ‘known world’, and today is a fascinating historical centre, and home to many major archaeological tourist attractions. These include the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Trojan’s Column, the Forums and the Column of Marcus Aurelius. Added together with the Vatican, which houses innumerable works of art and historic buildings, Rome is a must see for every European visitor!! This historic centre of Rome and the properties of the Holy See were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
