Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a modern, cosmopolitan city, a busy, bustling and energetic city, and a major tourist centre. It is a gateway to China and renowned for its lavish lifestyles, luxurious clothes and jewellery, outstanding shopping experiences and great hotels. Hong Kong is a city of surprises and a ‘must see’ destination for the avid tourist!! The city is an intricate mix of East and West, with both cultures fully intermingled. Here western culture is deeply imbedded into Hong Kong lifestyles and co-exists seamlessly with traditional philosophy and practices of the Orient. Hong Kong is a city of contrasts where you can experience the age old tradition of Chinese medicine and then see the latest fashion in clothing, or sail on a ‘junk’ in the harbour while you watch thunderous airplanes fly overhead. It is a wealthy city with a high general standard of living which is supported by the fact there are more Rolls Royce motor vehicles in Hong Kong per capita than in any other city in the world. However as in all cities around the world, Hong Kong also has its poorer areas where many of the population live very simply, often in extremely basic circumstances. For the casual visitor however, Hong Kong is an exciting city, a city of diverse contrasts, and a city which offers a great variety of options and the opportunity to explore its interesting culture and its fascinating heritage. Add to this, all of the nightlife the city offers, karaoke, bars and clubs, entertainments and festivals, including the world famous Chinese New Year celebrations and the Spring Lantern Festival held in Victoria Park, and Hong Kong is a destination like no other.

Hong Kong city is located on the northern shoreline of Hong Kong Island, and is separated from the mainland and the Kowloon Peninsula by Victoria Harbour which is known as one of the world’s deepest maritime harbours. The city has a startling skyline of crowded high rise buildings which are backed by the steep hills that lead to the famous Victoria Peak. The Peak, as it is called locally, rises to over 550 metres with the summit easily accessible by the Peak Tram which takes approximately 5 minutes to climb the 1.4 kilometres to the top. The journey and the summit has become a major tourist attraction and provides visitors with unsurpassed views over Hong Kong, Victoria Harbour and Kowloon which are recognised worldwide as one of the city’s iconic images. The majority of the urbanized area of Hong Kong city lies on the northern coastline of the island facing Kowloon with the sub-tropical vegetation of the inland peaks providing the city with an appealing natural backdrop. Hong Kong services locals and tourists alike with a comprehensive transport system which consists of buses, trams, M.R.T., ferries and hydrofoils which reach every corner of the island. Together with the fact that English is widely spoken and that most signage is displayed in both Cantonese and English, Hong Kong remains one of the easiest cities to explore.

Hong Kong is recognised as one of Asia’s premier tourist destinations and receives over 30 million visitors each year. Many of course (10 million) visit from China and only stay one day, many arrive on business and many are simply interested and excited tourists. Approximately 20 million visitors (tourists and business people) stay an average of three nights and for these tourists several popular attractions are listed below. They include the exciting tram ride to the summit of Victoria Peak, Madame Tussauds which is well known as an interactive celebrity experience and a wander down Hollywood Road and Upper Lascar Row (also known as Cat Street). Here visitors can enjoy the antique shops, the open curio market or stroll along Ladder Street to barter for a particular interesting object. The Man Mo Temple is also located on Hollywood Road and visitors are welcome to enjoy the tranquil interior and absorb the incense-filled atmosphere. For something a little different why not visit the Happy Valley Racecourse which welcomes visitors to its exciting night racing, and if the mood takes you the nearby Hong Kong Horse Racing Museum provides a glimpse into the sport’s amazing history. There’s great shopping along Causeway Bay, more shopping in the renovated Western Market and night time entertainment to be enjoyed along the cobble-stoned lane known as Lan Kwai Fong. The SoHo area of Hong Kong is another popular place and overflows with a wide range of top quality restaurants. It is of course also possible to take the short ferry ride on the Star Ferry over Victoria Harbour to Kowloon to search through the huge variety of shops on Nathan Road, or possibly take a stroll down the Avenue of Stars to see Bruce Lee’s statue and perhaps enjoy the ‘Symphony of Light’ which plays over Hong Kong’s skyscrapers every night after 8 P.M. Of course for the more curious amongst us there is the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the fascinating Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. For art lovers the Hong Kong Museum of Art features over 15,000 art objects including calligraphy, antique Chinese treasures, and paintings of historical significance and collections by local artists, while the Hong Kong Space Museum generally satisfies the curiosity of the science buffs amongst us.

Still on the island and easily accessible from Hong Kong city is the small harbour town of Aberdeen. The town is known by the local Chinese as Hong Kong Minor and lies on the southern shores of Hong Kong Island. Aberdeen provides visitors with the interesting sight of its floating fishing village where hundreds of Chinese boat people permanently live in the harbour, and the famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant, one of Hong Kong’s most famous attractions. Another short trip from Hong Kong takes visitors to Lantau Island where the ever popular Disneyland Resort provides endless family fun. The island also offers the Giant Buddha that is located near the Po Lin Monastery and is recognised as the world's tallest, seated Buddha, and the Ngong Ping 360, a 5.7 kilometre cable car ride which provides a spectacular view of the beautiful landscapes of Lantau Island.
