| Obwalden, Switzerland |
The monastery village of Engelberg lies in a valley overlooked by Mount Titlis, Mount Jochstock and Mount Engelberg, also known as Mount Hahnen in the Canton of Obwalden, central Switzerland. It is a small municipality of only 40 square kilometres which lies to the east of the major part of the Canton of Obwalden, separated by a narrow corridor. This small village community, with its own little river running nearby, is home to only 3500 people, most of which are involved in the local tourist industry as Engelberg is the leading mountain resort in central Switzerland, both in summer and winter!!
In winter Engelberg is home to a 12 kilometre descent of 2000 metres from Mount Titlis to Engelberg and 80 kilometres of ski slopes, 24 railway and ski lifts, 36 kilometres of marked winter trails, 3 exciting toboggan runs and 50 kilometres of winter walking snow paths, it’s no wonder Engelberg is such a popular winter resort. In the summer, enjoy the lush green alpine meadows, fresh mountain air and spectacular scenery on some of the 360 kilometres of hiking and mountain bike paths. Or perhaps take an exhilarating ride to the top of Mount Titlis and enjoy the awesome view of the Swiss Alps, or for something a little less energetic, a nice quiet round of golf!!
Apart from the outdoor activities and the awesome scenery, it impossible to visit Engelberg without seeing the Engelberg Monastery, founded 1120. The Monastery was the original settlement in the valley, with the village growing around the walls of the Abbey once it was built. The original Abbey was almost completely destroyed by fire in the 18th century but was totally rebuilt to its present form. Once established this Benedictine Monastery became highly regarded as an educational centre throughout Europe, having a very extensive library of 20,000 books!!
During the 19th century, Engelberg with its 300 days of sunshine, become known as an alpine resort and spa due to its pure water and clear fresh mountain air. It didn’t take long for this winter wonderland to catch the attention of the growing number of skiers in the mid 19th century to change the face of the valley. Today, winter or summer, the natural beauty and pristine conditions are a sight to see, so take a horse drawn sledge ride, or go for an exciting trip to the ‘top of the world’ and enjoy the hospitality of Engelberg – literally ‘Angel Mountain’ – a heavenly place!!
