Uluru was first visited by William Gosse, famous Australian explorer, in 1873 and named Ayers Rock, and has become one of Australia’s most recognizable landmarks. The rock is the world’s biggest monolith (single rock mass) being 348 metres high with a walking circuit of 14 kilometres and is made of red sandstone, which reflects the light in a myriad of colours. The rock has traditionally been part of Australian Aboriginal culture and is today part of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park which is managed by the Anangu, the traditional landowners of the area. The Anangu provide walking tours to explain the flora and fauna, plus tells some of their dreamtime stories associated with Uluru. The immense size of Uluru is awe inspiring and the area has a unique esoteric feel which has to felt to be believed – a must see for any visitor to the Red Centre.
