British Columbia, Mountains, Canada
The exciting and vibrant city of Vancouver stands on the Burrard Peninsula overlooking the Straits of Georgia on the west coast of British Columbia. The city’s northern border nestles against the slopes of the magnificent snow-capped North Shore Mountains, and the southern border crosses the Fraser River and spreads over lowland areas which extend towards the international border with the U.S.A. that lies 40 kilometres to the south. Vancouver is an international and cosmopolitan city home to approximately 2.2 million residents making it the largest in B.C. and the third largest in Canada. It is also one of Canada’s largest industrial centres, one of the largest ports in North America, and supports a busy film making industry which has led to its nickname of ‘Hollywood North’. Recognised as a popular tourist destination, Vancouver provides major cruise ship facilities which attract approximately one million visitors a year with many enjoying Alaskan tours, while many more visitors arrive to explore the city and then move on to the stunning scenery of the nearby mountains or to enjoy the numerous outdoor activities. Boasting world class tourist attractions, a great selection of accommodation, excellent shopping and an endless supply of good quality cafes and restaurants, Vancouver makes an ideal travel destination.

Surrounded by pristine forests and mountain landscapes which create its breathtaking location, Vancouver is considered by many to be one of the most livable cities in the world. The city is comprised of a large number of distinct communities that are in part defined by the bodies of water that make up some of their borders. The busy and bustling downtown area of Vancouver is the main business, commercial, cultural, financial and entertainment centre of the city, and is comprised of numerous high-rise buildings, both commercial and residential. Hidden amongst the maze of streets in the downtown area Vancouver provides visitors with several popular tourist areas including historic Gastown, which witnessed the first settlement in the area that grew up around a saloon built by ‘Gassy’ Jack Deighton; popular Chinatown which is one of the largest historic Chinatowns in North America and known for its exotic markets and herbal apothecaries; and Granville Island which is an interesting location filled with artist’s studios and workshops, galleries and a public farmer’s market. For local colour have a wander down Granville Street which is one of the city’s major streets, or for trendy shopping try the well known Robson Street which is also where visitors can take a look at Robson Square and the Public Library. The new building of the library has become one of Vancouver’s controversial landmarks as it is constructed in a coliseum-style of architecture which some residents believe is unsuitable for a modern and contemporary city! Robson Street of course ends in Stanley Park which is well worth a walk around for the fresh air and fantastic views, and is the location of Vancouver’s most popular visitor attraction, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre which is known for its exciting wildlife shows. Other attractions include the iconic Canada Place which houses the Vancouver Convention Centre and is one of the two Alaskan cruise ship terminals in the city; the interactive Telus World of Science; Vancouver Art Gallery; Vancouver Maritime Museum; the Museum of Vancouver; the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre which includes the planetarium called the Star Theatre; the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia which is a leading museum of the Pacific Northwest Coast First nations culture.

For visitors with a little more time it is worth noting that within easy reach of the city several places of interest are worth a look such as Grouse Mountain and the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
