Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria
Salzburg is the provincial capital of Salzburgerland and stands on the banks of the state’s primary river, the Salzach. It is a beautiful, historic, Baroque city, located against a backdrop of pristine mountains and is Austria’s fourth largest city with an estimated population of 150,000. Built on the former site of the Roman town of Juvavum, the ‘Old Town’ of Salzburg lies on the left bank of the river where St Peter’s Church and a monastery were established in 700 A.D. The ‘Old Town’ was named a U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Site in 1977, and is considered to be one of the best preserved centres north of the Alps and is well known for its Baroque towers and churches including the beautiful Salzburg Cathedral which was the first Baroque building in the German speaking world.

Located in the heart of Europe, Salzburg is a city of culture, former home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn, it is today home of the Salzburg Festival, a world renowned annual musical event that attracts lovers of good music, especially Mozart, from around the world. Salzburg is well known for its architectural heritage of 17th and 18th century houses and the delightful charm of its streets which exude a sense of substance and quiet confidence!! Historically Salzburg has been a wealthy city for hundreds of years due to the mining of salt, which is reflected in several impressive buildings built by the Prince-Archbishops. These included numerous sacral buildings which have created a special atmosphere and which have led to the city being once called the ‘Rome of the North’!! Notable buildings include the 900 year old Festung Hohensalzburg which stands high above the city and was the former stronghold of the Archbishops and considered to be one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, the Archbishop’s opulent medieval palace, the Residenz at Residenzplatz 1 in the heart of the city and the Schloss Hellbrunn, the Archbishop’s summer residence with its fountains and beautiful gardens which lies just south of the city.

Salzburg is also a university city which together with being a popular tourist destination means the place has a good supply of welcoming cafes and restaurants. Good food and good beer is the stuff that keeps us going, and keeping on going you must do if you wish to see everything there is to see in Salzburg. The place has so many attractions apart from those mentioned above, such as the Getreidegasse a long narrow street at the centre of Salzburg’s popular shopping area and home to the old burgher’s house at Getreidegasse 9 where Mozart was born and which is now a museum, Mozart’s residence at Markartplatz 8, St Peter’s Monastery which houses the Johann Michael Haydn Museum, the Salzburg Zoo, the Toy Museum and the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Modern Art, the architecturally interesting Franciscan Church in the old town, the 17th century Mirabell Palace, St Francis Church and St Sebastian’s Church and Cemetery – to name a few!! It’s a beautiful city, enjoy yourself!!
