Isle of Pines
Show Map
South, New Caledonia
Lying in the blue waters of the Coral Sea, the Isle of Pines is just 80 kilometres south of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia. Considered by some to be the ultimate Pacific island, it was named by Captain James Cook, who discovered it in 1774, and referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’!!

Surrounded by the New Caledonia Barrier Reef, the island is a famous snorkelling and scuba diving location, and home to many beautiful white sand beaches. Well known for its tall native pine trees (Araucaria Columnaris), it is an idyllic setting for the visitor, who wishes to getaway from it all and experience that tropical South Pacific feeling. Known as Kunie to the locals, the island is home to only 2000 (2006) local Kunies, and is only a small island being approximately 14 kilometres long and 8 kilometres wide.

Once a French penal colony which was established in 1872, the prison ruins are still visible for those that are interested, and the cemetery still stands, having been restored in 1968. Other places to visit are the N’Ga Peak, the highest point on the island at 262 metres, from where you can enjoy amazing views of the whole island, or the beautiful bays of Kuto and Kanumera which are linked by a narrow isthmus and have long, white sandy beaches!! It is possible from St. Joseph’s beach in Vao, to catch a traditional Melanesian outrigger from which you can see the tranquil bays, beaches and caves, and from where you can snorkel on some of the most brightly coloured coral reefs, home to vast numbers of small coloured fishes!!

The Isle of Pines offers a time warp, where you can feel that time stands still, it will work its magic on you, and will remain in your memory forever!!
