Noumea
Show Map
South, New Caledonia
Noumea, often referred to as ‘the Paris of the South Pacific’, is the only city, and capital of New Caledonia, an Overseas French Territory. It is one of the most westernized cities in the South Pacific Island Region, and is home to 146,245 residents, 50% of which are of European heritage. The number of people that live in the city, represents over 60% of the whole population of the island territory. The city lies on a peninsula off the south-west coast of the main island Grande Terre, and has a deep water harbour, an International Airport at Tontouta, and Magenta Domestic Airport in Noumea.

The city is dominated by French language and culture, having a distinctive European feel and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The city offers a good range of cafes, restaurants, lush shops and chic boutiques, with of course all of the interesting activities found in most cities, City Museum, Maritime Museum, the Michel Corbasson Zoological and Forest Park, the Noumea Aquarium, and of course the St Joseph’s Cathedral, built 1887 with convict labour!! To see the city and some of the places of interest, consider using the ‘Little Train in Noumea’!! There is the Little White Train, which travels along the bays and city centre, and encompasses the Botanical Gardens, while the Little Green Train, follows themes, such as the Flora and Fauna and the Cultural Tour.

Noumea city still retains its links with the local surroundings being close to the Bay of Lemons and the Anse Vata Bay, Noumea’s main area for water activities, having beautiful beaches fringed with coconut palm trees, the bays are a great place to enjoy that South Pacific experience!! While you are in Noumea, you must pay a visit to the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, a visually exciting building which contains items from the Kanak culture preserving their archaeological and anthropological heritage, and displaying contemporary modes of expression, particularly in crafts and artistic creativity. It is possible to include a visit to the Cultural Centre as a part of a ‘Little Train’ trip!!
