Port Vila is the capital city of the Republic of Vanuatu. The town is located around a magnificent natural harbour, and lies on the island of Efate, which is the third largest island in the archipelago. With a population of approximately 20,000, the town is a delight to walk around, interesting, safe and hospitable, with a cosmopolitan air and a combined English and French atmosphere. The Ni-Vanuatu people have been influenced by these countries, as they were governed by them for years, under the name, the New Hebrides, until 1980. The official languages are, English, French and Bislama, a phonetic form of English. The locals are so friendly and helpful, it’s a good example of what all islands in paradise should be like!!
The town sports some gourmet delights, try a coffee and cake at the local patisserie, or one of the forty cafes or restaurants, covering French, Vietnamese, Mexican, Japanese or Melanesian styles. If you have been game fishing, no doubt you will be dining on the ‘catch of the day’, with a free bottle of wine!! Have a walk around the markets, or stroll along the seawall by the park and enjoy the stunning views over Iririki and Ifira Islands. The nightlife is a little on the quiet side, but it’s easy to have some fun if you want to just shoot the breeze!!
Just out of town there is a beautiful Marine Reserve in Hideaway Bay, where you can go snorkeling. It’s just 15 minutes drive, take a taxi, it’s the best coral, and the fish are bigger than big. I should add there is a short boat ride over to Hideaway Island as well, that is if you want to catch the glass bottomed boat. If you are finding the temperature a little on the high side, make a visit to Cascade Falls, just a short 10 minutes drive and a 20 to 30 minute walk or so, to cool, tingling, fresh water falls. Try and take some reasonable shoes as it is a bit slippery!!
Oh, by the way. The shops usually have all their products at marked prices, and bartering is frowned upon as it is against local custom.
