The famous seaside resort of Nice is the gateway to the Cote d’Azur, or if you prefer, the French Riviera. It is a busy, bustling and cosmopolitan city, and France’s second most popular tourist destination with an estimated 4 million visitors. Many are attracted to Nice for its casual atmosphere and nightlife, while others come for its gorgeous coastline, picturesque countryside and beautiful beaches, with others attracted by the sunny temperate-climate and time to play in the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The city is also ideally positioned for visitors needing a base from which to tour this wonderful part of France, visit Cannes, Monaco or continue their travels into Spain or Italy. During the day the city of Nice has much to offer visitors, as they can explore the narrow streets of the Old Town and browse around the great selection of shopping outlets, stroll along the well known Promenade des Anglais, peruse the famous outdoor markets of the Cours Saleya, savour the many street-side cafes and restaurants or visit the popular museums and galleries. At night the lights dim, the tablecloths come out, the music is turned up, and the place begins to spin. Known for its vibrant nightlife Nice offers a great range and selection of clubs, pubs and bars, and other activities from casinos and opera to concert halls, which usually provides enough options to satisfy every visitor and keep them more than happy!!
Stretching along the gently curving Bay of Angels, Nice is centred around its medieval core which lies at the foot of ‘Castle Hill’, so named as a chateau once stood on the summit, and extends inland towards the north over gently rolling hills which rise to the south-western extremity of the European Alps. The Old Town, which includes its port and harbour, is the part of Nice where most of the important monuments and a large number of beautiful buildings with decorated facades can be found. Before you begin your tour of Nice, make a trip to the Acropolis where a visit to the Office of Tourism can help you with ideas of what to see and provide a map of the city. To begin though, explore the picturesque old quarter which is known as ‘Babazouk’ and stands at the foot of Castle Hill and extends to the Cours Saleya which is well known for its almost daily markets. Here, in Babazouk, it is possible to see the magnificent Baroque styled 17th century Palais Lascaris - the 17th century Cathedral of Sainte Reparate that is located in the Place Rossetti which is considered to be the heart of the Old Town - the richly decorated, 17th century Church of St Jacques and the renovated town square, the Place du Palais de Justice, where visitors can see the notable architecture of the Palais du Justice. Also in the city there is the Basilica Notre Dame which is the largest church in Nice, the stunning Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicolas, and along the Promenade there is the palatial Hotel Negresco. Don’t miss the stunning modern architecture of the Church of Saint Joan of Arc which contrasts sharply with the Roman ruins of Cemenelum which are located in the suburb of Cimiez. At the Cemenelum ruins visitors will find the Archaeological Museum, and adjacent to the ruins, stands the 16th century Cimiez Monastery.
In addition to all these attractions, and for the culture buffs, there are a number of museums and galleries for which Nice is justly proud. They include the Museum of Matisse which features the works of Henri Matisse (1869–1954), and the Museum Chagall which exhibits the world’s largest collection of paintings and drawing by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) the Russian born French artist. Other museums include the Museum of Fine Arts which exhibits works by Monet, Renoir, Duffy and Sisley - the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which features works by Andy Warhol, Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint-Phalle – the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Naive Art to name a few.
Nice is located in the department of Alpes-Maritimes in the Region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur of south-eastern France, approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Cannes and just over 900 kilometres from Paris.
