| Queensland, Australia |
Stretched along a 75 kilometre length of Queensland coastline, between the Coral Sea and the Great Dividing Range lies Cairns gateway to the tropical north of Australia. The city, with a population of 128,000, and is 1700 kilometres north of Brisbane. Cairns is a tropical city, with a hot and humid climate. Average temperature in winter is 25.5 centigrade to an average temperature in summer of 31.7 centigrade. Between November and March is the wet season, when tropical monsoons affect the area and 2000mm of rain falls. The area is also prone to tropical cyclones, which form between November and May.
Due to it’s proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation and the Daintree National Park, Cairns attracts many local and international visitors, with over 3 million movements of passengers through the airport. Tourism plays a major part in the economy of Cairns, which supports many hotels and resorts supplying accommodation and other related services to visitors.
However, Cairns is the major commercial centre for the far North Queensland and Cape York Peninsula regions, which makes it a busy, cosmopolitan and vibrant city. Since Cairns was first founded in 1876, to support gold exploration that was occurring at the Palmer River, the city has developed to match this growth, and continues to expand due to tourism.
The Cairns region is the only place in the world where two World Heritage Areas meet, with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Daintree National Park, including Cape Tribulation, come together. Both of these areas are easily accessible from Cairns, the Barrier Reef is approximately one and a half hours away by boat, and the Daintree is only 130 kilometres by car. There are many tour operators supplying services to these locations, by boat, plane, car or helicopter. Due to the popularity of the whole region, tourists have a massive supply of services for every imaginable type of activity, from car hire to fishing, paragliding to diving, it’s all there just for the asking!!
Cairns city and suburbs has a beautiful, tropical look and feel. There is a relaxed attitude, an open feeling and holiday atmosphere. The older style buildings with their wide verandahs, mix well with the new developments and create an attractive combination of provincial Australian life. Cafes, restaurants and shopping for arts, crafts and souvenirs make a day around town a memorable experience.
