Suva is the capital city, and major port, of the Republic of Fiji, and is located on the south-east coast of Viti Levu. It is the main commercial, political and administrative centre of the Republic. Built on the shores of a peninsula in a reef protected bay, the city is the largest urban area in the South Pacific outside of Australia and New Zealand. Suva is home to 167,975 (1996 census) inhabitants in the greater metropolitan area, comprised of Fijians, Indians, Chinese and Europeans, making it an interesting, multicultural city.
Home to the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji Museum, Suva has several interesting colonial buildings, with the Roman Catholic Cathedral (built 1902) being one of the most prominent landmarks. Suva is a ‘walkers’ town, with Victoria Parade being the main road and heart of the city, besides which the local atmosphere can be enjoyed through a wide selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Along Victoria Parade is Thurston Gardens, a quiet refuge within which the Fiji Museum can be found, housing the world’s largest collection of Fijian artefacts, portraying every facet of traditional culture in the republic. The waterfront area is also very interesting, with the markets being a mix of exotic fruits, coloured Indian sweets and savories, baskets and carvings, giving a good insight into the heart of the city!! Upstairs you can visit a kava den and experience first hand the delights of Fijis’ traditional drink!!
Known for its high rainfall and humidity, Suva is not one of the major tourist destinations within the Republic. It is however a major stopover for South Pacific cruise ships, who visit to allow their passengers to enjoy the city.
