| Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy |
Bologna is the capital city of the Emilia-Romagna region, which lies in the northern part of Italy. It is Europe’s oldest University city, with the University of Bologna having been founded in 1088, and originally called the Alma Mater Studiorum, known as the ‘Studio’. Home to an estimated 400,000 residents, the city population swells to 500,000 when the students are in town!! The greater metropolitan area of Bologna houses an estimated one millions residents.
The city is located almost at the centre of the region, a major transport hub for road and rail, following the trend started in 187 B.C. when the ancient Roman, Emilian Way, was built. The road system in the historic centre of the city still largely follows the same grid pattern established by the early Roman settlement, and today this historical centre is well preserved and considered to be Europe’s second largest after Venice. Containing a wealth of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture and monuments, the city is a classic masterpiece with almost 40 kilometres of elegant arcades (or porticos) to walk along, giving you shelter from the heat, rain or snow!! The Portico of San Luca is the longest in the world at 3.5 kilometres, and has 666 arcades, and connects to the Porta Saragozza, one of the 12 gates of the ancient city walls, built in the Middle Ages.
Often referred to as ‘Bologna the Red’, which today has two meanings, one it refers to the city as being a stronghold of the communist ideology, and secondly, it refers to the historic red roofs and the beautiful, traditional, earthy reds and orange colours the buildings are painted!! The long and varied history of the city is reflected in the diverse architecture and culture that is modern day Bologna. Famous for its food and wine, and known as the capital of gastronomy, Bologna is world famous for its ‘Bolognese’ sauce and Bologna sausage.
Although not a major tourist destination, Bologna has so much history, so many places to see, and so much culture to experience, that it is well worth a visit to this classic, authentic, Italian city!!
If you are in town wander down the Via Rizzoli, it is one of the main streets and leads to the Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, where you can see the famous, historic two towers of Garisenda and Asinelli (built in 12th century), which marks the heart of the city. Or head for the Piazza Maggiore, it is the monumental centre of the old part of town, and it is here you will find the Basilica of San Petronio, and the tourist office which will supply you with maps and information!!
