| Tasmania, Australia |
Launceston is the second largest town in the state with a population of approximately 100,000. It is situated in the northern part of the state at the juncture of the North Esk, South Esk and the Tamar Rivers, just 200 kilometres north of Hobart. The town is the third oldest in Australia, having been settled in 1805, and this has left the area with many well preserved Georgian, Victorian and colonial historic buildings. Built in the 1800’s, Macquarie House, Franklin House and the Old Umbrella shop, thought to be the most original and well preserved Victorian shop in Tasmania, are well worth seeing.
The town in known by some as ‘Tasmania’s Garden City’ as it contains a large number of parks and gardens. However if gardens aren’t your thing, get your boots on and try a walk just out of town up the Cataract Gorge, or maybe have a tour and a taste at Boag’s Brewery, or maybe just wonder around town and enjoy the graceful Victorian streetscapes and soak up the atmosphere.
