Situated on the east coast of Tasmania, at the edge of Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay, is two hours drive from Launceston, and two and a half hours drive from Hobart. The small hamlet, of approximately 150 permanent residents, is nestled in a sheltered nook, on a small peninsula, between two beaches, with the stunning, picturesque Hazard Mountains, as a superb backdrop. Strangely, Coles Bay township, overlooks Coles Bay, and across the waters of Great Oyster Bay. This location is ideal for park exploration, whether by foot, mountain bike, or by 4X4 over the rough roads. Services for sea kayaking, boat charters, abseiling, climbing, fishing and four wheel driving tours, are available in town. Although small, the town offers accommodation from camping, to self catering, to luxury, it just depends on how deep your pockets are!!
Just for interest – The town is supposedly named after Silas Cole, one of the areas early settlers. He took advantage of the many Aboriginal shell middens scattered along Richardson Beach, and burnt the shells to make lime, which he later sold for a living.
