| Australian Capital Territory, Australia |
Australia's national capital has a reputation among Australians as a bit of a sleepy hollow. The planned city is home to Australia's highest concentration of politicians and bureaucrats, keeping the meticulously modern Parliament House and High Court up and running. But if you look past the hard-working inhabitants, and the endless looping and winding circuitous roads, you will find a very beautiful and carefully constructed town.
Parliament House dominates the city-scape, and provides an obvious place for visitors to start, looming large as you travel across Lake Burley Griffin and down Commonwealth Avenue. Sitting in the shadows is the Old Parliament House, now acting as the National Portrait Gallery. Nearby you'll find the High Court, National Library, National Museum of Australia, and just across the lake, the Australian War Memorial.
The name Canberra is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'meeting place', and venturing out you will find any number of beautiful museums and galleries, picturesque parks and gardens, embassies, theatres, restaurants, cafes and bars.
The city itself sits within the Australian Capital Territory, around 300km south west of Sydney. Most of the surrounding area is bushland, providing many delightful daytrip and wildlife options.
