Paris, Ile-de-France, France
Ah Paris!! What can be said that already hasn’t been? It is a unique, vibrant and exciting city, a city full of atmosphere, a city full of interest, a city with a fantastic cultural heritage. It is above all a city which needs to be experienced, felt, touched and heard, not just seen. Paris is home to so many attractions that visitors should take some time out to absorb the feel of the city, sit and have a coffee on the Champs-Elysees, watch the street performers in the Place Georges Pompidou, walk along the River Seine and gaze at the Notre Dame Cathedral, or climb the Eiffel Tower and wonder at the view. Paris is stunning and stylish, full of culture and couture, and boasts some of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, better known galleries and museums.
Fortunately the city is easy to see with many of the main sights within walking distance, those that aren’t are well serviced by the metro and bus. There are so many attractions and activities it is almost impossible to know where to start, but the major attractions include the famous, 12th century Notre Dame Cathedral - the beautiful Basilica of the Sacre-Coeur - the Louvre with its fantastic glass Pyramid - the Eiffel Tower which is considered to be the icon of Paris - the controversial Georges Pompidou Centre which houses the National Museum of Modern Art – the Centre of Science and Industry which is the largest science museum in Europe – the Orsay Museum, a gallery which exhibits a collection of impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces – the Arc de Triumph, the top of which provides a great view of the city – the Roman built Pantheon - and the Quai Branly Museum which exhibits indigenous art from Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
There are some other attractions that also deserve a little more consideration and they include the beautiful sculptures of the Musee Rodin, the colourful Gothic-styled Holy Chapel (Sante-Chapelle), the National Museum of Natural History, the Grand Palais with its many temporary exhibitions, and the Army Museum which is located at Les Invalides, under the dome of which stands Napoleon’s Tomb. It is also worth taking a walk down the elegant Champs-Elysees, a stroll down the famous Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore which is considered to be one of the most fashionable streets in the world, or a stroll around the narrow streets of Montmarte to see all of the local painters hard at work. Just remember though that at night it is also worth looking around the city, as many of the better known buildings are highlighted by external lighting which often makes them look even better than they do during the day.
Paris is a melting pot of cultures and a major attraction for people from all around the world. It is a city, which through its historic past, its exciting present and its amazing future creates influences in every corner of the globe. Paris is the largest metropolitan area in Europe and one of the world’s top ten Global Cities in terms of quality of life, livability and accessibility. Paris is a huge city, which is home to an estimated 12 million residents that makes this a very busy and bustling metropolis, mad with traffic, crazy for parking and busy with tourists. Paris is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations receiving an estimated 70 million visitors per year, so it is basically not easy to pick a quiet time to visit although the visitor numbers are generally weather dependant. Paris is always busy and so it is worth noting that the quieter period starts in September and runs through to February.
