| Otago, South Island, New Zealand |
The pretty lakeside town of Wanaka is located in the heart of the Southern Lakes District and is surrounded by snow capped mountains, ancient forests and pristine lakes and rivers. It is a small resort town of approximately 5,800 residents and stands on the southern shores of Lake Wanaka. It is the gateway to the Mount Aspiring National Park, which is renowned for the diversity of its landscape, and is the third largest park in the country and part of the huge wilderness of the South West New Zealand U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Area. Its position is of primary importance to the economy of the town as it is an all-seasons transport hub for travellers to and from the tourist area of the West Coast via the Haast Pass and for many visitors who are making their way towards Queenstown and Te Anau. Being located so close to large wilderness areas, Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea and several rivers ensures that Wanaka offers the opportunity for visitors to enjoy a large number of outdoor summer activities such as mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, jet boating, fly fishing, rock climbing and mountaineering. During the winter months, Wanaka is once again a major centre for outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding as it is located very close to the major ski fields of Cardrona, Snow Farm, Snow Park and Treble Cone (also known as TC) which is the largest ski field in the Southern Alps.
Wanaka is for many people an alternative to staying in the more commercialised city of Queenstown, and offers a large range of accommodation, restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars. During the day it is easy to enjoy simple pursuits such as a lakeside walk or a game of golf, sailing or waterskiing on the beautiful lake, or for something a little less energetic, a tour of one of the 45 local wineries, a visit to Puzzling World, a look at the Transport and Toy Museum and the New Zealand’s Fighter Pilots Museum or for a little escapism why not visit the Cinema Paradiso, to name a few available options.
It is worth noting that Wanaka is supplied with a helpful and informative up to date Visitors Centre.
