Alice Springs is the original name given to the overland telegraph station established in 1872. The “spring” was shown to the white settlers by the local Arrernte people and is really only a waterhole, being part of the Todd River. Alice Todd was the wife of the first telegraph station superintendent, and hence the names Alice Springs and the Todd River both synonymous with the red centre. In 1888 a township was establish approximately 4 kilometres south of the telegraph station and this became know as Stuart, so named after John Stuart, who’s expedition in 1862 opened up the whole of the centre of Australia to white settlers. This town was later to be renamed Alice Springs in 1933. In 1929 the train line was completed having been built with the assistance of the famous Afghan cameleers who had supplied goods to the town for many years.
With the coming of the train line, Alice Springs has grown into a large town of 30,000 people, with all the services and amenities one expects of city life. From the performing arts centre, speedway, world class desert golf course to the shops, restaurants and nightlife, the city has a worldly and vibrant attitude, while still maintaining the traditional outback feel. Each year 500,000 visitors are drawn to the city for its unique world renown Henly-on-Todd regatta, Alice Springs Masters Games (otherwise known as the Friendly Games), Alice Springs Rodeo and the Camel Cup. These events plus the town being a stepping stone to the MacDonnell Ranges, Kings Canyon, the Kata-Tjuta and Uluru makes Alice a must visit city. Tourism services, transport, tours and accommodation meets the needs of all types of traveler, from backpacker to five star.
