| South Australia, Australia |
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, a small and cosmopolitan city of 1.1 million people. The city was founded in 1836 by free settlers, the first planned city with wide boulevards and surrounded by parklands, giving an impression of openness with a country feel. Colonel William Light, the surveyor who laid out the city in military precision, has a statue in North Adelaide, from where a great view of the city overlooking the cricket ground can be seen. The historic tram ride from Victoria Square in the city to Glenelg, a seaside suburb, will allow you a view of the Old Gum Tree where the first government was proclaimed.
The city is often called the ‘Festival City’ since it is the home of the Festival of Arts, a world standard outdoor theatre of visual and performing arts (opera, theatre, dance, classical and contempory music, cabaret and new media ) performed in Elder Park. WOMADelaide a festival of dance and music, the Adelaide Film Festival, the Adelaide International Film Festival and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. It’s not all culture though the streets come alive once a year with the Clipsal V8 Supercar event drawing thousands to the otherwise quiet streets of the city.
In case it’s quiet you want there are great museums, art galleries walks along the Torrens River, botanical gardens or the zoo to see. However if it’s shopping you are after Rundle Street and the immediate environs caters for everybody’s needs. Where ever you are in Adelaide you are only a short walk to the markets, shops, restaurants, coffee houses or the park, it’s all waiting for you.
