The ‘Sun Coast’ is one of Fiji’s most traditional and undeveloped tourist regions. It extends from the central western coast of Viti Levu and includes the northern coastline terminating at the north-eastern islands which lie off the Rakiraki Peninsula. Boasting some of the driest and sunniest weather in Fiji due to standing in the protection of the relatively high, centrally located Nausori Highlands, the ‘Sun Coast’ is an area dominated by cane fields and cassava patches, and is scattered with rural villages and small towns. The ‘Sun Coast’ envelops Vuda Point, where early Melanesian peoples arrived in Fiji to settle at the historic village of Viseisei which marked the beginning of Fijian history and remains the home of all ancestral gods. The area is still imbedded with rich culture, traditions, myths, and legends and continues to be recognised by the indigenous people of Fiji for its huge cultural significance. Providing visitors with numerous accommodation options, an abundance of natural and cultural sites, and a huge variety of outdoor activities, the ‘Sun Coast’ centres around the towns of Nadi and Lautoka, and offers easy access to the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands.
