| Victoria, Australia |
The cosmopolitan city of Melbourne is a busy and bustling vibrant destination offering visitors an exceptional taste of the land downunder. Located on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, the greater metropolitan area of Melbourne sprawls over hundreds of square kilometres and is comprised of the historic centre, which stands on the northern bank of the Yarra River and is regarded as the major fashion, cultural, entertainment and sports centre of Australia; its’ inner suburbs which enjoy their own distinct character and personality; and the huge outer residential suburbs that spread for several kilometres in every direction. Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia boasting a population of over 4 million and is the capital city of Victoria. The main focus of Melbourne city revolves around the Yarra River and the iconic façade of the Flinders Street Railway Station. Here the Yarra River with its sturdy Victorian, Princes Bridge forms the southern limit of the CBD and separates the city from the relatively new Southbank development with its high rise buildings and the Kings Domain Parklands. This open parkland area is one of Melbourne’s most popular attractions and contains the Shrine of Remembrance, Government House, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and merges with the Royal Botanical Gardens. Across the busy St Kilda Road and still in the Southbank region, other major attractions of Melbourne include the Victorian Arts Centre, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Crown Entertainment Complex which houses the largest casino in the southern hemisphere. North of the river the historic, planned centre of Melbourne is laid out around a large rectangular format which is easy to explore on foot and revolves around several busy commercial streets that provide visitors with unparalleled shopping opportunities, and many lanes and alleyways which create an atmosphere unrivalled in Australia. Bustling with energy, it is here that the heart and soul of Melbourne can be found, its cosmopolitan image confirmed by its cultural diversity, and its image of conservatism thrown out the window. Known for its fanatical love for the creative arts, music, fine foods, good living and with a passion for anything sporty, Melbourne is a character-filled destination which can best be appreciated by personal exploration. Popular attractions include Federation Square where first time visitors to the city can peruse the Melbourne Visitor Centre and select some tourist information from the comprehensive supply on offer and then grab a coffee nearby and plan the day ahead. The Federation Square itself contains several unique examples of contemporary architecture some of which house the Australian part of the National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, which provides an unequalled experience of the moving image in all of its forms. Perhaps it would be good to get your bearings around the city and if so a visit to the Eureka Skydeck will provide visitors with an extensive view from the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower which is located in Southbank. Other places which may be of interest include the Queen Victoria Market, the largest and oldest in Australia, where Melbourne’s local colour and diverse cultures can be seen; the Victoria Museum which includes the huge Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Scienceworks and the Royal Exhibition Building where displays of the state’s historical, cultural and scientific collections can be seen; Melbourne Zoo, Melbourne Aquarium and Melbourne Gaol. However to enjoy the city it may also be a good idea to take a river cruise, ride on an historic tram or take a tour of the world famous Melbourne Cricket Ground, the MCG.
