| British Columbia, Mountains, Canada |
Located almost due north of Vancouver in the Canadian province of British Columbia, the resort village of Whistler has an international reputation for its good quality alpine skiing on the Whistler-Blackcomb Mountains. Home to approximately 10,000 permanent and untold numbers of casual residents during the tourist seasons, Whistler attracts over 2 million visitors each year and is recognised as one of the top skiing locations in the country as it offers the highest lift-serviced access, and the largest terrain area of any ski resort in North America. With large alpine bowls and forested glades the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains provide a combined 3,300 hectares of skiable slopes, 200 trails, 37 lifts, a fall of around 1,600 metres and the longest run of 11 kilometres, and enjoys an average 10.2 metres of snow each year.
Today the community of Whistler offers visitors an all year round destination for outdoor activities and provides facilities to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, golfing, tennis and boating during the summer months. While during the winter months, weather permitting, visitors can enjoy alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating and hockey. Add to this the lively and friendly local community with its variety of shops, restaurants and bars, its busy modern library and its interesting regional museum, and Whistler makes a perfect location to escape the occasional madness and frenetic activity of modern life.
The Whistler village stands on the valley floor of the Green River, between Green Lake and Alta Lake, and is nestled in the glaciated Coast Mountains with those to the south being the Garibaldi Mountains of the Garibaldi Provincial Park. Located roughly 40 kilometres inland from the Pacific Ocean, the village is easily accessible via the ‘Sea to Sky’ Highway (Route 99), and stands just 125 kilometres north of Vancouver, and 60 kilometres north of Squamish through which the highway passes.
