Bern, Switzerland
Considered to be one of the most original towns in Switzerland, the lakeside city of Thun is known as the gateway to the Bernese Oberland and is surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the country which includes views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. This charming historical centre is spread over both banks of the River Aare and the small mid-river island which is overlooked by the 12th century Schloss Thun, one of the town’s popular attractions. The quaint medieval town centre which traces its heritage from the 12th century was initially established as a river crossing and grew to become a flourishing market town by the 15th century. The 19th century witnessed the beginnings of tourism which today is a major contributor to the economy of the region, with Thun providing visitors with a unique opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere, and experience a well preserved and interesting old Swiss town.
Made famous by its well maintained and stunning Schloss Thun, the town offers visitors a diverse range of attractions and activities including its renowned historic town centre which includes the tranquil cobble-stoned Rathausplatz and the appealing Obere Hauptgasse. The town also features the remains of its old city walls, gates and towers - the beautiful covered bridge and weir, the Untere Schleusenbruecke - the appealing 15th century Town Hall (Rathaus), with its arched walkway and attractive clock-tower – the 13th century Schwabisturm, which was part of the original fortifications – and the 19th century Schloss Schadau, in the grounds of which can be found the 14th century Scherzligen Church.
Located just below the mouth of the River Aare as it leaves Lake Tun (Thunersee) the town also offers visitors several museums and galleries, including the Thun Panorama which is one of the oldest remaining 360 degree paintings in the world. Measuring approximately 7.5 metres wide and 38 metres long, this 200 year old painting was sketched by Marquard Wocher while sitting on a rooftop in 1808, and provides an accurate insight into the lives and times of the early 19th century. Located as it is amongst the beautiful scenery of the Swiss Alps and adjacent to the Thunersee, Thun also provides the opportunity for the more active visitor to enjoy walking, hiking, mountain bike riding and water sports.
